The invention discloses a system and method for detecting the thickness of a brake shoe of a locomotive. According to the system and the method, when wheels of the locomotive pass through the surface of a trigger sensor, the trigger sensor generates electrical signals; a first image collector is mounted at the outer side of a track, is connected with the trigger sensor and is used for collecting a first image of the side face of the brake shoe of the locomotive when the electrical signals of the trigger sensor are received; a second image collector is mounted at the inner side of the track, is connected with the trigger sensor and is used for collecting a second image of the bottom of the brake shoe of the locomotive when the electrical signals of the trigger sensor are received; an image processor is connected with the first image collector and the second image collector and is used for receiving the first image and the second image and detecting the thickness of the brake shoe according to the first image and the second image. Thus, the thickness of the brake shoe in the first image and the second image is detected respectively by using an image processing technology, artificial participation is not required, a detection error caused due to the fact that partial positions of the brake shoe are blocked can be avoided, and the thickness of the brake shoe can be detected in a quick, simple and accurate manner.
