The invention relates to an elevator fault detecting system and an elevator fault detecting method based on a zigbee network, and belongs to the field of the application of the Internet of Things. The elevator fault detecting system comprises a steel rope tension detecting module, a weighing sensor, a master controller, a motor driving module and an upper computer, wherein the steel rope tension detecting module is used for detecting the tension of a steel rope and transmitting data to the master controller through mobile nodes; the weighing sensor is used for detecting the weight of a whole elevator car and judging whether people are in the elevator car or not; the master controller is used for analyzing the data transmitted by the steel rope tension detecting module, sending out alarming signals to the upper computer when the data exceed a normal fluctuation range, controlling the elevator car to stop running immediately when people are absent and controlling the elevator car to stop running after the elevator car parks on a nearest floor when people are on the scene according to the judging result of the weighing sensor; the motor driving module is connected with the master controller and executes operation starting and stopping orders of the master controller, and the upper computer is used for receiving the alarming signals of the master controller. The elevator fault detecting system can detect the use conditions of the steel rope so that the steel rope can be replaced in time when being abraded; abnormities in sudden falling situation of an elevator are detected, and an emergency circumstance rescuing mechanism is started.
