A hybrid vehicle drive apparatus is provided with: an engine; a first differential mechanism connected to the engine to transmit rotation of the engine; a second differential mechanism connecting the first differential mechanism and a drive wheel; a switch device for shifting speeds in the first differential mechanism; a first travel state; and a second travel state. The second differential mechanism includes a first rotational element connected to an output element of the first differential mechanism, a second rotational element connected to the first rotating machine, and a third rotational element connected to the second rotating machine and the drive wheel. The first travel state is a travel state for travelling by using the second rotating machine as a power source while the first differential mechanism is differentially moved. The second travel state is a travel state for travelling by using the second rotating machine as a power source while the first differential mechanism is not differentially moved. When the engine cannot start by itself (S10-N), the region for travelling in the second travel state is greater than when the engine can start by itself (S10-Y).
