The invention relates to a congestion index detection system for a traffic intersection in front of a signal lamp. The congestion index detection system comprises image collection equipment, image processing equipment, signal lamp control equipment, 3G communication equipment and haze removing equipment, wherein the image collection equipment is used for photographing the traffic intersection in front of the signal lamp so as to collect an intersection image; the image processing equipment is used for processing the intersection image so as to acquire the congestion index of each lane of the traffic intersection; the 3G communication equipment is used for wirelessly sending the congestion index of each lane of the traffic intersection to a traffic management platform and receiving feedback signal lamp control signals; the signal lamp control equipment is used for controlling the time duration of traffic lights of each sub-lamp of the signal lamp based on the signal lamp control signals; and the haze removing equipment is used for eliminating the adverse effect caused by haze weather to the image. According to the congestion index detection system, the display of the signal lamp can be controlled according to the actual congestion condition of the traffic intersection even in serious haze weather, so that limited traffic resources are furthest utilized.
