The invention provides lithium plating detection and mitigation in electric vehicle batteries. A vehicle includes a traction battery and a controller. The controller is programmed to, in response to dynamic resistance and capacity of the traction battery for a drive cycle differing from dynamic resistance and capacity of the traction battery for a previous drive cycle by threshold percentages, controlling the traction battery to reduce lithium plating.
