The invention provides a vehicle parking monitoring system and method. An exemplary method may include receiving images of a parking space from a camera, timestamping each of the images; determining that a vehicle exists in the image; placing a boundary region around a region of interest of the vehicle, the region of interest not including individually identifiable information; reserving the boundary area and discarding the rest part of the image; and determining when the vehicle is no longer present based on a change in the boundary region of the image.
