A gestural access system includes: at least one ultra-wideband transceiver mounted to a motor vehicle; and a processor that operates in any of (i) a gestural entry mode to control an actuator associated with an entry shutter of the motor vehicle to lock, unlock, open, or close the entry shutter in response to an object within the sensing region of the at least one UWB transceiver assuming a predefined gesture and (ii) an inactive mode to control the actuator associated with the entry shutter to lock, unlock, open, or close the entry shutter in response to an object within the sensing region of the at least one UWB transceiver assuming a predefined gesture. Wherein the at least one processor does not receive or does not act on the UWB radiation detection signal, the at least one processor operating in a gestural entry mode in response to a known mobile communication device being within a perimeter defined around the motor vehicle, and otherwise operating in an inactive mode.
