An autonomous vehicle includes a detection system for identifying a change in the presence of wind, in particular gust, blown on the autonomous vehicle. The detection system may include one or more wind sensors, in particular, sensors configured to detect wind blowing on the vehicle from a direction transverse or perpendicular to a direction of motion of the autonomous vehicle. Additionally, the system may relate the detected gust to a change in behavior of the autonomous vehicle. The autonomous vehicle may react to the detected gust by altering the trajectory of the vehicle, stopping the vehicle, or communicating with a control center to obtain other instructions.
