Methods and systems for performing regenerative braking using feedback from a brake traction control system are disclosed, particularly methods and systems for operating a vehicle on a reduced traction surface. A controller of the vehicle obtains at least one of: environmental information or GPS information; determining a derating increment based on the environmental information or the GPS information; in response to detecting the traction control event, continuous derating is imposed by applying a torque limit on a braking torque of the vehicle based on the derating increment magnitude. The controller also determines a verification period and a derating reduction period based on the environmental information or the GPS information to reduce the continuous derating at a rate determined according to the derating reduction period in response to detecting a lack of the traction control event during the verification period.
