The present disclosure provides a system and method for avoiding undesired vehicle operation within an enclosed space. The present disclosure generally relates to systems and methods for avoiding certain undesired vehicle operations when a vehicle having a dual vehicle propulsion system is parked within an enclosed space. For example, when the hybrid electric vehicle is parked in a garage, it is desirable to avoid operating an internal combustion engine of the hybrid electric vehicle because the internal combustion engine may produce undesired gas emissions, in particular during start-up. In an exemplary embodiment, this problem is solved by defining a geo-fence surrounding the garage by a computer of the vehicle. When the hybrid electric vehicle is inside the geo-fence, the computer disables operation of the internal combustion engine, but allows an electric motor of the hybrid electric vehicle to operate to move the vehicle out of the geo-fence. The computer enables operation of the internal combustion engine when the vehicle has moved outside the geo-fence.
