The invention relates to a method for controlling a host vehicle which is driven at least partially autonomously, wherein at least the surroundings of the host vehicle, the legal driving conditions and the traffic ahead in the current lane are detected by sensors. The problem solved by the invention is to provide an improved method. The problem is solved by executing a first query relating to the possible speed and calculating a target acceleration when it is detected that the possible speed is greater than the current speed, and executing a second query relating to whether there is a vehicle in an adjacent lane within the observation area, it is accelerated at the calculated target acceleration (because no vehicle is detected within the observation area) or not at the target acceleration (because the vehicle is detected within the observation area).
