The invention provides a vehicle main contactor welding detection system. A vehicle includes a controller that, in response to data indicative of a voltage associated with an inrush current through a main contactor exceeding a first threshold, commands the main contactor to open and inhibit driving of the vehicle, and command the main contactors to sequentially open and then close in response to the data indicative of the voltage exceeding a second threshold less than the first threshold.
