The present disclosure provides a porous carbon fiber reinforced rubber composite. A rubber composition includes a rubber matrix and carbon fibers dispersed within the rubber matrix. The carbon fiber defines a plurality of pores distributed throughout the carbon fiber and includes a surface chemical doped with nitrogen and oxygen. The rubber composition may also include a plurality of additives selected from the group consisting of a cross-linking agent, at least one activator, at least one accelerator, and the like.
