The invention relates to a nested control loop structure for a hybrid propulsion system. According to at least one aspect of the present disclosure, a method for controlling power in an aircraft is provided. The method includes monitoring whether an electrical energy storage module electrically connected to an electrical bus exceeds a first current limit; and monitoring whether a generator module connected to the electrical bus exceeds a second current limit. If the current limit of either the electrical energy storage module or the generator module is exceeded by a predetermined excess, the method includes reducing power consumption of the electric machine by a predetermined bias until both the excess of the electrical energy storage module and the excess of the generator module are less than or equal to zero.
