The invention relates to a method for evaluating the contact distribution of contact elements of a battery module of a vehicle battery in order to subsequently charge or discharge individual batteries of the battery module by means of a module charger, and having a diagnostic function for the contact distribution of the contact elements of the battery module. In order to allow charging and discharging of the batteries of a number of different battery modules having different contact assignments, while automatically preventing incorrect operations, significantly reducing the investment costs in a workshop in a module charger, first connection of contact elements of a diagnostic unit corresponding to the contact elements of the battery modules is provided, and then connection of the contact elements of the diagnostic unit is provided. In order to establish an electrical connection with each contact in the battery module, at least one voltage measurement of the contact is subsequently performed on all other individual contacts of the contact element of the battery module and the voltage value assigned to the contact is stored. A contact assignment of a connection of the contact element with respect to the individual cells of the battery module is then determined on the basis of the voltage values assigned to the contacts, and finally the battery module is charged or discharged.
