The invention relates to a vacuum pump control method (1) for controlling an electric vacuum pump (128), comprising the steps of: determining (S3) an available vacuum level (Va) of a vacuum brake booster (104a, 104b) of a brake system (100); comparing (S4) the available vacuum level (Va) with the access vacuum level (V2); determining (S6) a brake request strength (119) of a brake request (108) provided to the brake system (100); determining (S8) a required vacuum level (Vr) based on the braking request intensity (119); comparing (S11) the available vacuum level (Va) with the required vacuum level (Vr); and operating (S12) the electric vacuum pump (128) to provide vacuum to the vacuum brake booster (104a, 104b) when the available vacuum level (Va) is below the required vacuum level (Vr) and below the access vacuum level (V2). The invention also relates to a brake system (100) and a vehicle (200).
