A forklift truck (10) has a pair of wheel assemblies (21) each rotatable about a pivot point (24) relative to a chassis (12) of the forklift truck, at least 90 degrees between a forward mode and a lateral mode. The wheels (18, 20) of each assembly are laterally offset from the pivot point (24) of the assembly such that the wheels depict an arcuate path on the ground when transitioning between the forward mode and the lateral mode. During the transition, an actuator acts on each wheel assembly (21) to pivot the assembly about a pivot point (24) while applying a driving force to the wheel to positively drive the wheel along an arcuate path at a speed matched to the pivot caused by the actuator. During the transition, if the vehicle is located on a slope, a forward driving force transmitted by the wheel assembly (21) to the wheels (18, 20) when changing direction may prevent the vehicle from rolling.
