The invention discloses an image positioning system and method based on semantic segmentation. One particular embodiment includes receiving image data from an image generating device mounted on an autonomous vehicle; performing semantic segmentation or other object detection on the received image data to identify and mark objects in the image data and generate semantically marked image data; identifying irrelevant objects in the semantic marking image data; removing irrelevant objects from the semantic marking image data; comparing the semantic tag image data with the reference semantic tag graph; a vehicle location of the autonomous vehicle is determined based on information in the matched reference semantic marker map.
