A wheel unit antenna and corresponding wheel structure for a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), where the antenna is sized and oriented such that the entire wheel structure, including a tire, will act as a waveguide. The antenna may be non-resonant, in the form of a monopole antenna perpendicular to the ground plane. In addition, the antenna length is substantially shorter than a quarter wavelength, such as one tenth wavelength ([lambda]/10) or less.
