An electric vehicle including a motor and a transmission and a control method thereof are provided. While the motor is performing forward rotation, the electric vehicle is driven forward when the forward gear is reached, and the electric vehicle is driven rearward when the reverse gear is reached. A fail-safe control that allows reverse rotation of a motor is performed when a transmission is switched to a reverse gear while an electric vehicle is traveling forward, or when the transmission is switched to a forward gear while the electric vehicle is traveling backward, thereby suppressing generation of a large shock in a vehicle.
