The invention relates to a column climbing robot and a working method. The column climbing robot comprises a power support and a follow-up support which are movably connected to form an annular shape. The power support comprises two sets of support arms arranged obliquely, one ends of the two support arms are connected to the power unit, and the other ends of the two support arms are provided with open U-shaped grooves. The power unit comprises at least two sets of elastic rubber wheels arranged in the vertical direction, the elastic rubber wheels are connected with the corresponding chain wheels, and one set of chain wheels is connected with the driving unit through the speed reduction unit. The follow-up support comprises two sets of support bodies which are connected end to end, each set of support bodies is in an arc shape, one end of each set of support bodies is provided with a rotating pin which is connected with the open U-shaped groove through a fastener, the other end of each set of support bodies is provided with a shaft pin joint, each set of support bodies is provided with at least one set of cambered surface idler wheels, and the two cambered surface idler wheels are symmetrical to the connecting line of the elastic rubber wheel.
