A vehicle and related systems and methods are provided for controlling the vehicle in an autonomous mode of operation. In one embodiment, a method includes determining a current value of a field of view associated with a sensing device on a vehicle, determining a target value of the field of view based at least in part on a speed of the vehicle, and responsive to determining that the current value is less than the target value, determining a fallback adjustment distance based at least in part on a difference between a target value of the field of view and an estimated distance to a nearest (CIP) vehicle in a path ahead of the vehicle within the current driving lane, determining a longitudinal trajectory of the vehicle based at least in part on the fallback adjustment distance, and autonomously operating one or more actuators on the vehicle according to the longitudinal trajectory.
