The invention provides a train wheel set motion state detection method and device. The method comprises the steps that a three-dimensional laser contour scanner on a train is used for obtaining point cloud data of a steel rail where a train wheel set is located; extracting feature points of the steel rail from the point cloud data based on a Hough transform method; and determining the motion state of the feature point based on a Newton iteration method, and determining the motion state of the wheel set of the train according to the motion state of the feature point. The motion state of the train wheel set is accurately detected, the detection equipment and method are simple, the detection efficiency is improved, and the detection cost is reduced.
