Aspects of the present disclosure provide systems and methods for identifying assigned passengers. For example, a dispatch instruction is received to pick up an assigned passenger at a pick-up location; manipulating the vehicle towards the pick-up position in the autonomous driving mode; identifying a set of pedestrians from sensor information generated by sensors of the vehicle; receiving orientation information of a client computing device associated with the assigned passenger; receiving orientation information indicating an orientation of a pedestrian in the set of pedestrians; comparing the orientation information of the client computing device with the orientation information of the set of pedestrians; and identifying one of the pedestrians in the set of pedestrians as the assigned passenger based on the comparison.
