The invention relates to a system for inspecting a surface structure of an aircraft or spacecraft, comprising: a ground vehicle with a drive; the manipulator is arranged on the ground running tool and is provided with a plurality of moving elements which are hinged to one another; the inspection equipment is arranged on the manipulator; a plurality of proximity sensors; and a control unit. The proximity sensor is distributed at least at the robot, is divided into a plurality of zones and is configured to detect a distance from the object. The system is designed to inspect a surface structure of an aircraft or spacecraft by means of a continuous movement of an inspection device along the surface structure. The control unit is designed to record the distance detected by the proximity sensor and to actuate the drive and the manipulator taking into account the detected distance, the inspection devices are arranged in sequence at a predetermined distance from the surface structure at the inspection positions and at the same time, a sufficient distance is maintained between the ground vehicle and the robot and the surface structure and possibly the object surrounding the surface structure.
