The invention discloses a method and equipment for identifying a congestion area of traffic. The method comprises the following steps: acquiring a set area; the set area comprises at least one road section group and at least one intersection; one road section group is formed by sequentially connecting at least one road section, and one road section is formed by a road between two traffic signal lamps; dividing the set area into at least one grid according to the set starting point and the set step length; the set step length is determined according to the length of each road section group included in the set area; for any grid, determining the kernel density value of the central point of the grid as the thermal value of the grid; the thermal value of the grid is used for describing the congestion degree of the grid; the congestion type of the grid corresponding to the thermal value is judged based on the thermal value of each grid; and dividing the grids of the same congestion type in each grid into a congestion area. The accuracy of distinguishing and identifying congestion is improved, so that the control of the traffic flow is assisted according to the congestion area.
