An installation vessel for installing a single pile supporting an offshore wind turbine. The vessel has a pile gripping device having a pile gripper and a support assembly configured to move the pile gripper relative to the hull within a horizontal plane. The monitoring system is configured to monitor the suspended individual pile in a horizontal plane relative to the pile gripper during a gripping phase in which the individual pile is suspended from the crane and is to be gripped by the pile gripper. The system provides a signal indicative of the position and movement of the individual pile relative to the pile gripper to a motion control unit of the support assembly.
