An optimal control strategy for a distributed low voltage system with a bi-directional DC/DC converter is provided. A vehicle system includes a DC/DC converter configured to receive a current from a high voltage battery module and output a regulated current to a low voltage battery. The vehicle system includes a control system coupled to the DC/DC converter, the high-voltage battery modules, and the low-voltage battery, where the control system is configured to control the DC/DC converter to re-flow one or more currents back to the one or more high-voltage battery modules in order to balance the state of charge in the high-voltage battery modules.
