The purpose of the present invention is to suppress an excessive steering angle of a steered wheel when a sudden steering is performed in an electric power steering system. In normal times, the reaction force actuator applies a steering reaction force (Tn), which increases sharply when approaching an upper limit ([theta] sn) of a virtual steering range, to the steering wheel. The reaction force actuator applies a steering reaction force (Te) to the steering wheel on the basis of an upper limit ([theta] se) corresponding to a narrow virtual steering range during sharp steering in which a steering angular velocity ([omega] t) is equal to or greater than a predetermined value ([omega] th) and a steering following delay ([delta] [theta] t (= [theta] t *-[theta] t)) is equal to or greater than a predetermined value.
