An intelligent vehicle system for automatically mitigating thermal events of a fully or partially enclosed vehicle, a method for making/using such a system, and a vehicle equipped with such a system are presented. A method of controlling operation of a vehicle includes a vehicle controller confirming that a target vehicle has been parked and, upon confirmation, responsively evaluating vehicle data indicating that the vehicle is at least partially enclosed in a parking area and thus in a state in which the vehicle is parked in an enclosed space (VPES). Upon determining that the vehicle is stopped and in the VPES state, the controller detects a thermal event in a battery cell of the vehicle battery system. When a thermal event is detected, the controller responsively determines path planning data having a specified route for disengaging the vehicle from the parking area. The controller then commands an autonomous driving system of the vehicle to perform a control operation to maneuver the vehicle away from the parking area.
