The invention relates in one aspect to a braking mechanism for a rail chassis (6) of a shipborne rail system (2), the braking mechanism comprising:-a braking unit (14) coupleable to a rail (8) such that the braking unit can move along the rail (8), the braking unit (14) comprising a brake (16) and a resilient biasing member (18), the elastic biasing piece biases the brake (16) towards the locking joint with the guide rail (8); and-an attachment for operably coupling a traction assembly (22) to the brake (16) wherein sufficient actuation of the traction assembly (22) releases the brake (16) from the guide rail (8) such that the guide rail chassis (6) can be transported along the guide rail (8) in a raised position by the traction assembly (22). A further aspect of the invention relates to a lifting mechanism for a guide rail chassis (6) of a shipborne guide rail system (2), comprising:-a lifting unit (44) coupleable to a guide rail (8) such that it can move along the guide rail (8), the lifting unit (44) comprises a lifting actuator (46) movable between a first configuration and a second configuration, movement of the lifting actuator (46) from the first configuration to the second configuration causing the guide rail chassis (6) to move from a rest position to a raised position relative to the guide rail (8).
