The invention relates to controlling a marine vehicle propulsion system. A method for controlling a marine vehicle propulsion system is disclosed. The propulsion system includes a cycloid rotor propeller, an actuator device, and a controller. The method includes receiving, by a controller, a request including at least one force request and/or at least one torque request; determining, by the controller, values of a set of control parameters based on the request; and controlling the cycloid rotor thruster based on the received values by an actuator device that receives the values of the set of control parameters from the controller.
