The invention relates to an axial clamping system for securing a wheel assembly to a drive spindle of a tire changing machine. The clamping system consists of a shaft for engaging an axial bore of the drive spindle, the shaft configured to have a set of ball bearings resting within radial bores arranged in a helical configuration and extending into a central bore of the shaft. Axial movement of the plunger within the central bore displaces the ball bearing radially to project outside of the shaft outer surface to engage with a helical passage within the drive spindle axial bore. Rotation of the clamp system within the drive spindle axial bore while the ball bearing engages the helical channel secures the clamp nut against the wheel assembly resting on the flange of the drive spindle. Reverse rotation and retraction of the plunger within the shaft releases the clamping force to allow the wheel assembly to be removed from the drive spindle.
