According to a method for calibrating a gesture recognition algorithm for opening a vehicle area closed by a movable part (3) by gesture control, the gesture recognition algorithm is provided in a computer-readable format, which is adapted to recognize a predetermined gesture as a function of a time-varying sensor signal from an ultrasonic sensor (5) of the vehicle (1). The ultrasonic sensor (5) is used to generate a first sensor signal that varies over time while the first person (8) performs a gestural action in the field of view of the ultrasonic sensor (5), from which first sensor signal a first value of a predetermined parameter of a gesture recognition algorithm is determined and stored.
