The invention relates to a synchronous electric machine with reconfigurable rotor and stator poles. The invention discloses a non-magnetic motor. The electric machine may comprise: a stator comprising a first stator winding arrangement and a second stator winding arrangement; and a rotor comprising a first rotor winding arrangement and a second rotor winding arrangement. The electric machine may include a power transfer circuit configured to control the polarity and/or phase sequence of an excitation current used in exciting the first and second stator and rotor windings, and the stator and rotor poles thus generated, respectively.
