Systems and methods for initiating combustion of a rechargeable lithium battery that powers an unmanned electronic device. A cell status regulator coupled to the battery is configured to change a status of a selected initiating cell of the battery by modifying at least one electrical or thermal characteristic of the initiating cell in response to a triggering event, the changed status resulting in initiating an internal short circuit in the cell, triggering a thermal runaway process, and battery combustion, thereby damaging at least one target portion of the device. Initiating the changing state of the battery cell may include heating, overcharge, reverse polarity, external short circuit, or forced discharge. Heating may be applied using a heating element powered by electrical energy extracted from the at least one battery cell. The trigger event may be receiving an activation signal from a remote activator or detecting an initiation condition according to a preloaded instruction.
