The invention relates to an operating device (1) for a bottom-bracket drive (3) of an electric bicycle, and to a method for controlling the bottom-bracket drive (3), wherein the operating device (1) is designed to be fastened in the region of a handlebar grip (5, 6) of a set of handlebars (4) of the electric bicycle (2), the operating device (1) comprising at least one actuating element (7, 8), which can be moved, in each case starting from a neutral position (13), by a finger, in particular the thumb, of a user in a first actuation direction (9) and a second actuation direction (10) different from the first; wherein each actuating element (7, 8), starting from the neutral position (13), can be brought, in any of the two actuation directions (9, 10), into at least two functional positions (11, 12) located one behind the other, and returns to its neutral position (13) by being released; wherein, a first actuation force is required in order to achieve a first functional position (11), and a perceptible point of resistance has to be overcome by a second actuation force which is increased by comparison with the first actuation force in order to reach at least one second functional position (12). The invention also relates to an electric bicycle (2) having such an operating device (1).
