An engine control system (101) having an engine (105), a digital engine control (103), and a gain logic (115) disposed within the digital engine control (0103) for use with an aircraft. The digital engine control (103) is configured to receive and process inputs from systems within the aircraft. Gain logic (115) uses the inputs to generate command data to regulate the performance of the engine (105) so as to allow rotor speed deviations from a set point. The gain logic (115) also allows rotor speed (405) deviations from the set point for a selected durational time constant (T 2 ).
