The invention relates to a method for replacing a first signal box (1), to which field elements of an external system (5) are connected by means of first actuating parts (3), with a second signal box (2), to which the field elements of the external system (5) are connected by means of second actuating parts (10). In order to be able to perform the signal box replacement without interrupting operation, in other words with trains still running, the following steps are provided: 1. constructing the second signal box (2) having the second actuating parts (10), 2. coupling the second signal box (2) to the first signal box (1) in order to transfer notifications of the field elements of the external system (5) to the second signal box (2), 3. connecting the second signal box (2) to an operating station (11 or 9) for controlling the field elements of the external system (5) by means of the first actuating parts (3), 4. successively switching off the first actuating parts (3) and switching on the second actuating parts (10) associated with the same field elements of the external system (5), and 5. disconnecting the first signal box (1) having the first actuating parts (3) from the second signal box (2).
