The invention relates to a method for setting an LED signal transmitter (1) that is connected to a signal box, in terms of day and night mode. In order to be able to carry out such a method with comparatively little effort, the input current (Isg) through the LED signal transmitter (1) and the input voltage (Usg) at the LED signal transmitter (1) are changed at least once, and the effective series resistance of the LED signal transmitter (1) is determined from the different input current and input voltage values. A source voltage (Uq) is calculated using the effective series resistance and the different input current and input voltage values. An output signal (Ua) characterising a day mode or a night mode is produced depending on the magnitude of the source voltage (Uq). The invention further relates to an LED signal transmitter (1).
