A system (10) for nondestructive evaluation of railroad rails (12, 14), includes a carriage (32) including a plurality of wheels (36, 38, 40) movably supporting the carriage (32) on the rails (12, 14), a source of vibration (46) mounted on the carriage (32) and connected to transmit vibrations (46) of a preselected frequency to test regions (48, 50) on the rails (12, 14) through the wheels (36, 38, 40) to cause an increase in temperature of the rails (12, 14) at locations of flaws (52) in the test regions (48, 50), an infrared detector (54) for recording thermal images (300) of the test regions (48, 50) to detect the increase in temperature of the location of the flaws (52), a controller (56) connected to actuate the infrared detector (54) to record the thermal images (300) of the vibrations (46) impacting the test regions (48, 50), and store the thermal images (300) recorded by the infrared detector (54).
