The present invention relates to a battery system (100), comprising a plurality of battery cells (90) connected in series, a plurality of balancing circuits (80), each balancing circuit (80) being connected in parallel to one of the plurality of battery cells (90), and a bleed resistor (81) connected in series with a balancing switch (82). At least one balancing switch (82) is configured to be set non-conductive in response to a control signal and to be set conductive in the absence of the control signal. The invention further relates to a control unit (70) for a battery system (100), comprising a plurality of cell pins (71) configured for receiving a cell voltage of one of a plurality of battery cells (90), a plurality of depletion mode transistors (82) configured for being set non-conductive in response to a control signal and to be set conductive in the absence of the control signal and a balancing controller (60) configured to output a control signal to the gate of each of the depletion mode transistors (82). Therein, each depletion mode transistor (82) is configured to be connected in parallel with one of the plurality of battery cells (90) and in series with a bleed resistor (81).
