A monitoring system (100, 200) for an electric power-assisted steering system (100, 200) comprising a DC power supply (102, 202); an inverter bridge (106, 206, 306) including a plurality of bridge switches (114) selectively connecting phases of a multi-phase electric motor to the DC power supply (102, 202), the multi-phase electric motor being configured to provide power-assistance to a steering system (100, 200) of a vehicle; a bridge driver circuit (110, 210, 310) for providing control signals to the inverter bridge (106, 206, 306); and a DC link capacitor circuit (104, 204, 304) interposed between the DC power supply (102, 202) and the inverter bridge (106, 206, 306), the DC link capacitor circuit (104, 204, 304) at least one DC link capacitor (116). The monitoring system (100, 200) comprises a monitoring circuit (112, 212, 312) configured to monitor the integrity of the DC link capacitor circuit (104, 204, 304), and outputting a ripple value indicative of a ripple voltage in an output of the DC power supply (102, 202); and comparison means for comparing the ripple value with at least one ripple parameter indicative of a fault in the DC link capacitor circuit (104, 204, 304) and determining whether a fault is present.
