An aircraft-based object manipulation system and corresponding method. The object manipulation system is coupled to the airframe of an aircraft, and comprises: - a plurality of sensors configured to identify a physical characteristic of an object; - a processor communicatively coupled to the sensors and configured to control operation of the object manipulation system based on information from the plurality of sensors, and to control alignment between the object and the aircraft.
