In one embodiment, a method for reducing drag includes forming first periodic riblets (110) on a smooth surface (104) of a physical object (100) and forming second periodic riblets (120) on the smooth surface (104) of the physical object (100). The method further includes generating a flow over the first (110) and second periodic riblets (120) of the physical object (100). Each first periodic riblet (110) comprises a first transition region (145) at a first end of each first periodic riblet (110) and a second transition region (145) at a second end of each first periodic riblet (110). Each second periodic riblet (120) comprises a first transition region (145) at a first end of each second periodic riblet (120) and a second transition region (145) at a second end of each second periodic riblet (120). Each second transition region (145) at the second end of each first periodic riblet (110) overlaps each first transition region (145) at the first end of each second periodic riblet (120). A length of each riblet of the first (110) and second (120) periodic riblets runs parallel to a direction of the flow (155).
