A method for automatically establishing a plug-in connection in order to charge electric vehicles is described, wherein first the relative position between a free plug-in connector (2), which is arranged on a positioning head (3) that can move in at least two spatial directions, and a permanently installed plug-in connector (4) is determined by a position sensor (5) that detects the positioning head (3) and the permanently installed plug-in connector (4), whereupon the free plug-in connector (2) approaches the permanently installed plug-in connector (4) until there is mechanical contact between interacting guide surfaces (8, 8a, 9, 9a) of the two plug-in connectors (2, 4) in an insertion position, and the free plug-in connector (2) is moved, by means of the positioning head (3), in the plug-in direction into a plug-in position. The aim of the invention is to design a method of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that, despite using fewer components and components that are suitable for mass production, reproducibly reliable plug-in connections can be established. This aim is achieved, according to the invention, in that the distance, relating to a common plug-in axis (S) of the plug-in connectors (2, 4), between the guide surfaces (8, 8a, 9, 9a) continuously decreases during the plug-in process, in that transverse forces, with respect to the plug-in direction, occurring on the guide surfaces (8, 8a, 9, 9a) are detected by transverse-force sensors (7), and the positioning head (3) is moved transversely to the plug-in direction and/or about a pivot axis that extends transversely to the plug-in direction, so as to minimise these transverse forces.
