The invention relates to a method for controlling a human-machine interface (4) of a motor vehicle (2), said human-machine interface (4) having at least one display device (8, 10, 12) for displaying information (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44). At least one drive situation parameter is ascertained which characterizes a drive situation of the motor vehicle (2), and a load parameter is determined on the basis of the ascertained drive situation parameter using an algorithm (20), said load parameter characterizing the cognitive load of a driver (6) of the motor vehicle (2) so that the display device (8, 10, 12) information density of information to be displayed by the display device (8, 10, 12) is adapted according to the load parameter, wherein the algorithm (20) comprises a data set with drive situation parameters, each drive situation parameter is assigned to a load parameter, and the load parameters are based on at least one measured variable which characterizes the behavior of the driver.
