The invention relates to a brake resistor for a vehicle fitted with an electrodynamic braking device, wherein the brake resistor has at least one elongated heating cartridge (1), which has cold regions (6) without a heating element (4) at the ends and a hot region (7) between the cold regions (6) and thermally expanding in the longitudinal direction of the heating cartridge (1) when a current flows through a heating element (4) extending over the length of the hot region (7), and which is retained by means of a bearing assembly, which has a fixed bearing (8) and at least one floating bearing (9), wherein the brake resistor has a monitoring device which deactivates the brake resistor when a maximum permissible heating cartridge temperature is identified based on a detected maximum thermal longitudinal expansion of the heating cartridge (1).
