An aircraft ice protection system (12) includes a frequency dependent susceptor (54) coupled to a critical surface (16) of an aircraft (10). A radio frequency (RF) energy source (15) is configured to apply RF energy (60) to the frequency dependent susceptor (54). The aircraft ice protection system (12) is configured to selectively operate in a susceptor absorbing mode and a water absorbing mode. The aircraft ice protection system (12) operates in the susceptor absorbing mode until a Faraday layer (50) associated with ice formed on the critical surface (16) reaches a target characteristic. When the target characteristic is met, the aircraft ice protection system (12) initiates the water absorbing mode.
