The method is applied to a system including a first device and a second device, and includes: When a fault occurs in a first transmission unit of the first device, the first device sends fault information to the second device, where the fault information indicates a fault cause of the first transmission unit; a second transmission unit of the second device receives the fault information, stores the fault information in a storage space, and sends a notification signal to a processing unit of the second device; the processing unit receives the notification signal, and reads the fault information in the storage space. In embodiments of this application, the second device may obtain the fault information by reading the local storage space. This improves fault determining efficiency of the second device. Further, the method may be applied to an internet of vehicles, for example, vehicle-to-everything V2X, long term evolution-vehicle LTE-V, or vehicle-to-vehicle V2V.
